The Tories need to wake up and realise that Universal Credit is nothing but a universal failure. Almost every day, I receive letters from people in Wallasey who cannot afford to put food on their table because of this Government’s absolutely shameful welfare policies. Tory Minister after Tory Minister have gladly wielded the axe, tearing apart the benefits system and leaving the most vulnerable people without any support.

In response to my question today, the Minister demonstrated just how painfully out of touch he is when he patronisingly suggested that Labour MPs had not actually visited our jobcentres and seen first-hand the misery that Universal Credit is wreaking. In fact, the Minister offered to meet me at the local jobcentre, apparently forgetting that the Government have already shut it down.

It has never been clearer that this is a Government with their heads stuck firmly in the sand, and only a Labour Government will end the roll-out of Universal Credit, and reform our social security system so that it can once more support the most vulnerable and offer a safety net we can all be proud of.
