There has been understandable outrage at the recent revelations that two people sadly died from a severe allergic reaction after eating inadequately labelled food at the well-known high street food retail chain Pret-a-Manger.

Today, during an urgent question on food labelling in the House of Commons, I told the Minister that it was time for the Government to step up and stop being complacent around the issue, and to strengthen enforcement to ensure that allergen labelling on food is clear to consumers.

However, as is typical, the Minister’s response was less than satisfactory. He appeared to distance himself and the Government from taking any responsibility for enforcement, instead shifting the blame onto the Food Standards Authority.
