On Friday I marched with Leasowe residents from Queen Square Bus Station in Liverpool to Merseytravel HQ at Mann Island in order to hand in a petition calling for the reinstatement of the 106 bus service between Liscard and Moreton. This followed a public meeting at the Leasowe Millennium Centre that I organised, held earlier in the spring.

It is clear that the removal of this service has left residents cut off from their local community and from essential services such as the local hospital and the shops. The petition contained over 1200 signatures from concerned members of the local residents.

The cuts to bus services are due to the 30% reduction in funding Merseytravel has had from the Tory Government. Coupled with the profit-driven deregulated bus system we have in the UK, introduced in the 1980’s under Thatcher, this has meant a perfect storm leading to communities having ever more vital bus services removed. Labour has repeatedly called for bus services in England to be re-regulated, and better funded, protecting residents from cuts such as this.

Upon handing in the petition in to Cllr Robinson, Chair of Merseytravel, he committed to looking at the service changes again and seeing what further work can be done to reinstate the 106 bus.

Whilst this work is ongoing, I’m pleased to announce that there will be some positive changes to the way the current number 1 service operates starting in September. This will mean that users can connect to the Liscard bus, at Leasowe, without having to cross the road. I will post more information on this when I get it.
