Today, during the Prime Minister’s statement on the NATO summit that took place last week, I asked the Prime Minister what the implications of President Trumps protectionist policies, in the guise of trying ‘to make America great again’ will be for the NATO alliance. The NATO alliance has been instrumental in preserving peace across Western Europe for the last seventy years, and Trump’s continued inward looking, isolationist policies threaten this stability.

I agreed with Jeremy Corbyn’s response to the Prime Minister when he said that government policy should be addressing the drivers of security threats. Last week’s summit was a chance for NATO to reset its approach to the problems it faces, but instead this was another summit dominated by the erratic behaviour of President Trump.

As has been seen by his actions today in Helsinki, it is obvious that this is a President who is more comfortable in the presence of authoritarian leaders, such as Putin and Kim Jong Un, than the elected leaders of the world’s democracies.

The Prime Minister did not answer my questions and failed to condemn President Trump’s reckless tantrums and unfounded statements about NATO, and the countries within the agreement, to do nothing more than to try and further his own profile domestically before the upcoming midterm elections in America.

The Prime Minister has shown that she cannot even stand up to members of her own backbenches, and she has no answers about how she will stand up to the President of the United States and ensure that the protectionism that President Trump is exercising does not needlessly threaten global diplomacy and escalate into an international security crisis.
