Universal Credit
Universal Credit

Many constituents have contacted me with concerns about the proposed roll-out for Universal Credit in Wallasey on the 15th November. Last week I met with the Citizens Advice and the Wirral Food Bank who outlined the impact they believe it’s going to have on new and existing claimants. It was good to hear about the work they did and the support services they offer, in spite of Government cuts, and heartening to hear about the 120 volunteers they have offering advice and support to Wallasey residents.

Labour has called on the Government to halt the proposed roll-out of Universal Credit ahead of Christmas as it takes a minimum of six weeks for payments to be made, often leaving people with no money for food, electricity or heating – and that’s without the added financial pressures that inevitably come with Christmas. This will cause households to go into debt and extreme poverty with Councils and Housing Associations predicting a surge in families being evicted over the festive period.

Here in Wirral, Labour are supporting a Christmas Hamper scheme to help the most vulnerable during this period. We’re specifically looking for non-perishable food, small gift sets, toiletries and Christmas treats. You can donate at my Liscard constituency office.
