Many constituents have contacted me with concerns about the proposed roll-out for Universal Credit in Wallasey on the 15th November. Last week I met with the Citizens Advice and the Wirral Food Bank who outlined the impact they believe it’s going to have on new and existing claimants. It was good to hear about the work they did and the support services they offer, in spite of Government cuts, and heartening to hear about the 120 volunteers they have offering advice and support to Wallasey residents.

It was wonderful to have Tom Watson join us on the campaign trail earlier this week, where he met volunteers and members of the public in Liscard at a street stall. Tom is a great trade unionist and he's brilliant at taking the fight to the Tories. Even the sun came out, which was lovely!

Weeks after telling us there was no need for a General Election, the Prime Minister has very cynically announced a second national poll weeks after the local elections.

I am immensely grateful to the voters of Wallasey for returning me to Parliament for the sixth time with a doubled majority, and for giving me the opportunity to serve my constituents for a further five years.

It’s fantastic to welcome 53 new Labour MPs to Parliament. I am particularly proud that 65% of these new MPs are women, and 15% are from BAME communities. It speaks to the inclusivity of our Party which has led the way with all-women shortlists and encouraging BAME candidates.

Now, more than ever, we need a strong Labour Party to fight for those most vulnerable in our society and to counter the worst excesses of a Tory government. Our Parliamentary Party needs to be active and robust in defending hard-won workplace rights, as well as fighting for our embattled NHS.

In these rapidly changing times, it is clear that we as a Party need to reflect on the result last Thursday, and to conduct an honest, open debate about how we chart a course back to Government. There are hard lessons to be learnt, but I firmly believe that Labour can rebuild, and that we can once again provide compelling answers to the challenges our country faces.

Thank you!

Angela Eagle MP responds to the Budget.
“George Osborne’s claim that the sun is shining doesn’t ring true for people and families on Merseyside who for the first time since the 1920s are earning less at the end of a government than they were at the beginning.
Households are on average £1600 a year worse off and there is a real issue with low-paid, exploitative zero hour contract jobs which give people no security whatsoever.  The Chancellor did nothing to address this.  He also failed to mention that the Tories have imposed 24 major tax rises over the past five years, which has contributed to the rising cost of living for ordinary people.
It is insulting for the Chancellor to say that living standards are improving when the reality is quite different. It is only the privileged few at the top who are benefiting have benefited under the Tories; everyone else has been left behind.
The Budget also gave the Chancellor the opportunity to deal with the funding crisis in the NHS. By not doing so, he further confirmed the dangers the Tories pose to the NHS if they’re given another term. By their own admittance they want to take public spending back to the levels of the 1930s. It is a dangerous risk that we can’t afford to take.”
