Women born in the 1950s have had a raw deal on their pensions under the Tory and Coalition Governments.

The Tories have accelerated the rise in the state pension age for women, meaning that tens of thousands of women are not receiving the pension they expected and were promised.

Women born in the 1950s expected for decades to receive their state pensions at the age of 60, only to be told that they would have to wait much longer, their leaving retirement plans shattered.

As your representative in Parliament, I have held the Government to account for the injustices placed upon women born in the 1950s. It is a fundamental belief of the Labour Party that the pensions system should ensure dignity in retirement, and properly reflect the contribution to our society that older people have made and continue to make.

I, and the Labour Party, are committed to campaigning and voting for a fair solution, which includes:

• Extending Pension Credit to those who were due to retire before the Coalition Government’s pension age. This would alleviate the worst of the impact for the most vulnerable women, and restore the dignity that many of them feel has been taken away;
• Protecting the triple-lock on pensions;
• Protecting pensioner benefits, such as free TV licenses, free bus passes and the winter fuel allowance.

As MP for Wallasey I have been fighting for my constituents for 25 years and I will continue to stand up for the women who have been disadvantaged by these unfair changes introduced by the Tories.
